The children in Junior and Senior Infants have been busy learning about road safety in school. We spoke about the importance of always wearing seatbelts, reminding the driver to stay off their mobile phones, never distract the driver and to slow down. We had a special visit from Mallaidh’s dad who is a guard and he spoke to us about road safety too! He even drove his garda car into the school yard and we got to turn on the siren, wear the garda hat and use the walkie talkie’s!
We celebrated Pancake Tuesday in school with lovely pancakes provided by the Parents Association and we learned a pancake poem “Mix a pancake, stir a pancake, pop it in the pan, flip a pancake, toss a pancake and catch it if you can”
In maths we were learning all about money. We learned to recognise coins up to 20c, learned to solve simple problems with money, role play shop and customers in pairs and we sorted coins into different sets! The children even used Lidl magazines to make their own dream shopping list and wrote the prices of each item on tags! Lots of fun, meaningful and interactive learning!
We explored clay in art and we used words to describe the clay e.g. hairy, dry, smooth, wet, bumpy etc. The children then had fun making different creations with the clay. We listened to the story of “The Hungry Caterpillar” and made a caterpillar with the clay!
For book week we had the book fair in our school and we got to listen to new stories in the school library. We had a live webinar with famous illustrator Quentin Blake and he guided us along in drawing some cool illustrations! We had 6th class visit us to act as a scribe for our wonderful stories that we made up! We had been working hard on learning how to formulate a story – looking at characters, settings and problems with resolutions! There are definite future authors in the class!
Thanks to Tom’s dad who brought in new baby lambs and calves to us as we were learning about the journey of milk from grass to glass.
We have been using our Six Bricks methodology to teach STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) and the children worked in groups building bridges between tables. They tested out the strength of their bridges by placing items on top to see how much weight they could hold.
Looking forward to another busy May and June in Junior and Senior Infants J
