Maths
This term, we explored addition and subtraction in fun and interactive ways. We used number games, whiteboard relays, puzzles, and online challenges to strengthen our mental maths. Working in pairs and small groups, we solved real-life word problems and shared strategies with one another.
Literacy
In Literacy, we focused on the genre of explanation writing, with a strong science focus to tie in with Science Week. We explored a range of fascinating topics, including:
We also wrote about how Christmas is celebrated in different countries, comparing traditions and learning about festive customs around the world. The children planned, drafted, and edited their pieces carefully, showing great effort and curiosity in their work.
History and Poetry
We learned about the Industrial Revolution and how it influenced art and literature. We examined the mill picture poem closely and explored poetry inspired by the changes of that time. The children wrote their own creative poems using what they learned in History.
Science Week
Science Week was packed with fun, learning, and discovery.
We explored the concept of regeneration, looking at how starfish can regrow limbs and how trees can regrow branches. We built up our science vocabulary and carried out exciting experiments such as:
-
Rainbow in a Jar (exploring liquid densities)
-
Egg in Vinegar (observing chemical reactions)
-
Pitch with Glass Bottles (investigating sound and adaptation)
We also researched famous scientists like Rosalind Franklin and explored science-based careers such as geneticists, biologists, and robotics engineers. It was a truly inspiring week full of curiosity and teamwork!
Special Visitor
In November, we welcomed a storyteller to our classroom. She brought stories to life by inviting us to use our voices, sound effects, and acting skills to become part of the tale. It was great fun and sparked our imaginations!
Christmas Activities
This term, we worked together on a special class Nativity project. We created a crib using recycled materials, with each group helping to design and build different parts. We also used props and costumes to take photos and create a Nativity storyboard that told the story of Jesus' birth, which we displayed for Religion.
We did lots of Christmas art, which was proudly displayed in the church. Our class sang beautifully at the Christmas Carol Service, filling the church with festive cheer. We also went to the National Opera House for Sing Out Loud, which was a fantastic experience.
To top it all off, Santa paid a visit to our classroom in December! We received Christmas annuals and treats that kept us busy and entertained in the lead-up to the holidays.
Rackard League News
A huge congratulations to the boys’ team, who won the Rackard League final in Bellefield! It was an exciting achievement and a proud moment for everyone involved.
After such a hardworking and fun-filled term, we’re all looking forward to a well-earned rest.
Happy Christmas from 5th Class at Monageer NS!
