Green School Flag

Monageer National School is a Green School. The Green Schools programme promotes long term, whole school action for the environment. It is a student-led programme with involvement from the wider community. We are very proud to have worked on and achieved the Litter and Waste, Energy, Water, Travel, Biodiversity and Global Citizenship - Litter and Waste flag for our school. This year we are working on the theme Global Citizenship – Energy.

About the Green School Flag

The Committee:

This year our ‘Green Team’ is 3rd and 4th class. The Green Team are very passionate about being part of the Green School Committee and have been working very hard to achieve the Global Citizenship – Energy flag.

Green School Code/Motto:

Our fantastic Green School Code was created by Donncha Maher and James Murphy in 3rd class. Our Green School Motto was created by Cathal Whelan in 6th class.

Environmental Review:

For our Environmental Review, we carried out a Global Awareness Survey and took a closer look at the Global Goals for Sustainable Development. We also carried out an energy audit in our school. This helped us to asses our current situation regarding the energy usage in our school, while also looking at issues surrounding energy on a global scale.

Bike Week 2022:

To promote active and sustainable travel, the school took part in last year’s Bike Week. A great effort was made to reduce the number of cars and traffic on our roads, and at our school gate. We held a whole school raffle to encourage us all to cycle to school as much as possible on this week. Congratulations to our prize winners and a big thank you to Green Schools for the fantastic bike week prize packs!

We also took part in the National COW (Cycle on Weekdays/Wednesday) with 48 cycling to school on the 19th May. Altogether we had 115 cycling to school during the week.

The whole school also participated in the Freedom Machine Comic Competition, where all students created a comic strip with themselves as the main character. They used their senses to become adventurers and to visualise all they could see, hear and smell on their journey to school.

Maintaining our Flags:

Along with working towards our energy flag, we worked on maintaining our previous flags such as the Litter and Waste flag. Last year the Green School Committee created a yard clean up rota to help keep the school grounds clean and free of rubbish. Each class looked after a designated area and ensured all rubbish was put in the correct bin.

Nude Food Wednesdays

To reduce the amount of litter and waste brought into our school, we also introduced ‘Nude Food Wednesdays”. On this day, all students and staff aimed to bring no plastic, cling film, tinfoil etc. to school and that essentially all of our food is nude. Our goal was to reduce our plastic use throughout the school and to become more mindful of the packaging we use.
